What Are Case Studies?

Case studies are an excellent way to present your company in a positive light, in the media and as marketing collateral. They describe how a customer’s business has benefited from using your product (or service). A case study is an account of an activity, event or problem that contains a real or hypothetical situation and includes the complexities you would face in the workplace. Case studies are used to help you see how the complexities of business influence decisions.

A good case study has the following features:

  1. It is taken from real life (true identities may be concealed).
  2. It consists of many parts and each part usually ends with problems and points for discussion. There may not be a clear cut off point to the situation.
  3. It includes sufficient information for the reader to treat problems and issues.
  4. It is believable for the reader (the case contains the setting, personalities, sequence of events, problems and conflicts)

Case studies, also known as customer success stories, are an excellent way to get attention for your business. They’re a way to tell your story without sounding self-serving. Having customers talk about how your product solved their business challenge is often more useful to them than having you say it.

In many instances, industry trade publications are looking for customer success stories. They’re a great way to personalize a story and  explain how your product helps another company, giving it credibility and third-party endorsement. They also can be used in online marketing and for sponsored content.
