Blogging can be fun or it can be a drag. If you love to write, try your hand at blogging. If not, find a PR professional who can do it for you. I’ve been blogging for a while, so I wanted to share a few things I’ve learned about how to blog:
1. Be helpful
In researching this topic, I came across a blog by Amy Lynn Andrews. In her post, How to Decide What to Blog About: 8 Tips she writes, “You are much more likely to attract (and keep) readers if your blog provides information your readers can use… if your family owns a farm where you raise llamas…talk about how you raise llamas and not just that you raise llamas. Think about what someone might be looking for and solve a problem for your readers.”
2. Keep it short
Ideal size for a blog is 300-500 words. Twitter only allows 140 characters. Blogging lets you write longer passages but don’t get carried away. People don’t have time to read a treatise, but will be open to something they can digest in 5 minutes or less.
3. Use your voice
Everyone has their own voice. While you might read something and want to use it, give your opinion/your take on it. That also brands you as an expert.
4. Stick to the niche or blog topic at hand
Don’t go on tangents. Give advice, opinions, tips, useful information.
5. Be consistent
Do not give up after posting 2-3 blogs. It may take some time for people to find you, but once they do, they will be looking forward to your posts, so don’t disappoint.
6. Promote your blog
Once you post your blog on your website, make sure to promote it on your social media channels. Oftentimes, customers won’t see your blog if it’s only on your website. You need to promote it to to your customers through LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and email marketing.
