Drugs and alcohol. They’re serious addictions. People with addictive diseases are stigmatized, some say they suffer discrimination. Unlike heart disease or diabetes, addictive diseases are not seen as a medical condition. Avita is changing that, with its caring philosophy and dynamic peer-support groups. In April 2011, it opened one of the state’s few Crisis Stabilization Units for people with mental illness. Since it’s opened, it’s remained full, a testament to the mental health problem. Avita also provides services to youths and teens with drug addiction through its Gainesville Clubhouse.
Alpine started working with this amazing organization in March and has reached out to local media in Atlanta and North Georgia. From the AJC to the Gainesville Times, we’re spreading awareness of the incredible services this organization offers.
